HISTORYTop Austrian and South African Stand up Paddlers Karina Figl and Michelle Fourie, teamed up in August 2011 and formed SUPsistas, a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) initiative that aims to introduce as many girls and women to the sport, to have FUN and support local children who have been orphaned.
“Our mission is to inspire women to have fun on the sea, get fit, healthy and push their personal limit to bring out the best in themselves and at the same time support children empowerment programmes,” explains Figl. SUPing is an old form of surfing whereby you stand up and propel yourself through the surf with the assistance of a paddle. “SUP boarding is a revival of a Hawaiian surfing tradition within the ever- growing international surf scene,” says Karina Figl. “Our aim is to share our passion and skills with other ‘sistas’ in the hope that they will experience the same enjoyment we do from the sport and also to increase the level of women wave riding and racing. We also hope to gain us much funds as possible for the support of three orphaned children who lost their mother tragically last year.” Leading SUP brands such as Coreban, JP and RRD are supporting the SUPsista’s initiative by supplying them with demo boards for SUPers who don’t yet have their own boards and paddles. The first session for aspirant SUPers will be a thrilling workout on the beach and in the ocean. SUPsistas will equip novice SUPers with the skills they need to go paddle by themselves as well as teaching the more advanced sistas wave riding skills and technique which will help them to enter regular competitions that take place throughout the summer. Even more important than competitions is the fun factor: "Due to the size and floatation the board provides, it becomes a lot easier to ride waves than regular surfing. It's a great surf option for flat or small days, and when you get it wired you can have a lot of fun in bigger surf too," says Michelle Fourie. “Also, in our local waters, being as cold as they are, I’d rather be standing on top of the water than sitting in the water”. |
